  Effects of BitTorrent on a Starbucks-AT&T Hotspot
  I recently discussed the phenomenon of a single application accidentally taking down a T-Mobile cell and how BitTorrent would have an even worse effect. I wanted to test this with BitTorrent, but doing so on a cell tower isn't feasible at this moment and it's not something that any wireless carrier would want me to test on their production network. So I found the next best thing during off hours at a Starbucks hotspot operated by or in conjunction with AT&T and Wayport. I conducted the tests well after store closing in front of the store from my car when no one was at the store, and the BitTorrent test only ran for 141 seconds so that it wouldn't disrupt any background activity that the store might be running.

  Last FCC voted to open up unlicensed spectrum was in 1985, which led to the development of Wi-Fi. To unleash more new technologies, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has voted again to free up vacant airwaves between TV channels, also called white spaces. This is the first significant block of spectrum made available for unlicensed use in 25 years, said the Federal agency. Last Thursday, five-member FCC voted unanimously to allow the use of white spaces in the broadcast TV spectrum to deliver broadband connections, which agency is calling super Wi-Fi. They hope to see devices with the new technology start to appear within a year.

  According to a recent report released by In-Stat, shipments of Wi-Fi Chipsets based on the draft n/802.11n will surpass those based on 802.11g in 2010. This will be mainly because of the increase in the shipments of mobile handsets and notebook PCs, In-Stat said. IEEE 802.11 is a set of standards, which allow for communication of wireless local area network computer communication in the 2.4, 3.6 and 5 GHz frequency bands. IEEE 802.11g extends throughput to up to 54 Mbit/s using the same 2.4 GHz band as 802.11 and it is an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 specification.

  Report: Connecting Via WiFi to Access Mobile Services Impacts Revenue
  More than 20 percent of people visiting Web sites to buy content through their mobile phones are now connecting via WiFi, according to Bango, a global, mobile Web technology company. Since connecting via WiFi makes mobile visitors unrecognizable by networks, content providers and operators are finding it difficult to sell and market mobile services to them. This in turn impacts mobile content revenues significantly. The use of WiFi on mobile handsets is becoming pervasive, according to Frank Dickson, vice president of research at analyst firm In-Stat. In-Stat anticipates that 20 percent of the total WiFi chipsets will be used in mobile phones by 2010 as manufacturers continue to ship an increasing number of WiFi enabled handsets.

  iPass recently saw its 20,000th hour of Wi-Fi usage on the TeliaSonera HomeRun Wi-Fi network which covers Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Lithuania. iPass said they began activating the network earlier this year after signing a roaming agreement with TeliaSonera and since April 2008, their users have been able to connect seamlessly to more than 1,800 hotspots as the venues have rolled into the iPass roaming network.
