The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Taps Powerwave Technologies

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Powerwave (News - Alert) Technologies was recently selected by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, to upgrade its public safety wireless communications networks. The agency operates some of the nation’s busiest and most vital transportation links, including John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports, and the 16-acre World Trade Center site.

In a bid to comply with the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC (News - Alert)) 800MHz frequency re-banding requirements, the agency decided to replace its legacy equipment. Earlier this year, the agency began a project to fulfill its goal and as part of the project, selected Powerwave to replace key wireless infrastructure components, including donor repeaters, as well as the fiber optic amplifiers for remote locations at Newark Liberty International Airport.

According to Powerwave Technologies, the wireless coverage system for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was completed in August 2008.

Powerwave’s family of repeaters offers numerous benefits including the ability to be easily adjusted for re-banding without requiring the replacement of any of its repeater components. Thanks to Powerwave’s repeaters, re-banding can be accomplished simply by remotely (or locally) changing the pass bandwidth from the pre re-banding to the post re-banding frequencies.

Dave Quinn, vice president, Global Wireless Solutions, pointed out that for over two decades, Powerwave has been designing and installing wireless coverage systems that support and enhance public safety communications for airports, railways and a host of other transit venues.

“We are proud to assist The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in fulfilling the FCC’s 800MHz re-banding requirements for its public safety wireless network, while improving public safety communications for first responders,” he stated.

Powerwave has also deployed DAS systems for transportation venues such as the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Powerwave Technologies is a global supplier of end-to-end solutions for wireless communications networks. Recently, Latin America’s tallest office building, the 55-story Torre Mayor located on Mexico City’s popular Paseo de la Reforma, began offering its tenants and visitors uninterrupted access to wireless voice and data services, thanks to a state-of-the-art in-building wireless coverage system designed by Powerwave Technologies.
