Vonage and D-Link Launch VWR in Canada

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Internet telephony provider Vonage Canada and networking technology manufacturer D-Link Canada announced the availability of the D-Link VWR in the Canadian market. The D-Link VWR allows customers to set up a wireless-B/G network while accessing their Vonage (News - Alert) phone service.

D-Link VWR is four devices in a box. It includes a Wireless-B/G Access Point; a built-in 4-port switch to connect wired Ethernet devices; a router function so the entire network can securely share a single cable or DSL Internet connection, and two standard telephone jacks, allowing for multiple phone lines. Bundled with Vonage's Internet telephony service, it offers customers the hardware and all needed to begin talking.

"We are happy to work once again with Vonage to provide consumers with more hardware choices when signing up for their Vonage service," said D-Link Canada's broadband sales manager Kajer Boadway in a statement released on Monday. "With D-Link's expertise in networking devices and Vonage's leading edge phone service, customers are getting the best of both worlds with the D-Link VWR."

Customers wanting to get started making Vonage phone calls only need to get a high speed Internet connection and the D-Link VWR router. They can then simply connect their D-Link VWR router to their high-speed Internet connection and any touchtone telephone. Once activated, they simply pick up their phone and start making and receiving calls.

The D-Link VWR is currently available online for $74.99, after a $65.00 instant rebate.

Vonage and D-Link had launched the VWR last Wednesday in the U.S. The new device is currently being sold online for $59.99 (U.S.), after a $40 instant rebate.

The news came on the heels of the VoIP service provider's announcement a week ago about it having over 85 percent of its subscriber lines in the U.S. currently equipped with Enhanced 911 (E911), a feature that associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number automatically. The service provider has since turned on E911 at more than 500 locally-run emergency call centers across the U.S., bringing the total number of calling centers with emergency 911 to over 5400.
