Samsung Telecommunications America Collaborates with U.S. Army's CERDEC

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Samsung (News - Alert) and the U.S. Army’s CERDEC will reportedly evaluate WiBRO technologies at the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) On-The-Move (OTM) experimentation facility located at Ft. Dix, New Jersey over the next few months.

Also known as 802.16e, WiBRO is the South Korean version of Mobile WiMAX.

WiBRO allow users to move between base stations while placement of these base stations remains at strategic locations offering best coverage for customers.

Both Samsung and the U.S. Army will focus the experimentation and analysis on leveraging commercially available WiBRO technologies in a mobile military environment in lieu of the customary commercially fixed infrastructure.

The engineers aim to characterize the performance of the WiBRO products in an environment consisting of both mobile users and mobile base stations. According to a press release the Army is attracted to technologies, such as WiBRO in order to provide an affordable wireless technology to the warfighter in a relatively short period of time.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., made news last month for beginning the mass production of 16 gigabit (Gb) NAND flash, the highest capacity memory chip now available. The company will reportedly fabricate the devices in 51 nanometers (nm), the finest process technology to be used in memory mass production to date.

“In rolling out the densest NAND flash in the world, we are throwing open the gates to a much wider playing field for flash-driven consumer electronics,” said Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor in a statement to the press.

He continued: “To minimize production costs and improve performance, we have applied the finest process technology a ‘half generation’ ahead of the industry, which is introducing 55nm and higher.”

CERDEC is the Army's information technologies and integrated systems center.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. Innovates and provides semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technologies.

Samsung Telecommunications America is a Dallas-based subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
