NTT Com and Coordinate to Expand WLAN Roaming Services into China

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Coordinate Technologies has reportedly finalized a bilateral roaming agreement with NTT Com.

In the first phase of the roll out, NTT Com roaming subscribers will have trial access to over 900 Wi-Fi hotspots by connecting through the Coordinate interconnection platform. These hotspots are managed by China Mobile (News - Alert) in six Olympic cities. It has been decided that the coverage will be expanded to over 4000 hotspots by the end of 2008.

Coordinate Technologies said that Chinese subscribers will have roaming access to over 1300 NTT Com Hotspots throughout Japan.

An official partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, China Mobile is currently investing heavily in WLAN network deployment throughout China covering 43 airports and over 700 brand hotels. The network will ultimately cover the Olympic venues, stadiums, athlete villages and surrounding areas in six Olympic cities.

According to Coordinate Technologies’ officials, given the current lack of 3G data services and the heightened excitement leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, a large number of international Carriers want to access the China market.

Jason Liang, CEO of Coordinate Technologies, noted that Japan is China’s largest import partner and is of the biggest sources of foreign visitors to China. He said that their company is very excited to initiate this opportunity with NTT Com.

“NTT Com continuously develops the WLAN global roaming footprints, and China is one of the most expected coverage,” said Yuji Furusawa, manager, WLAN Global Roaming (News - Alert) Group, NTT Com.

Furusawa added that NTT Com is very excited to serve their subscribers by extending their service through this strategic agreement.

Founded in 2006, Coordinate Technologies Communications provides wireless data interconnectivity and other value added services to global Service Providers.

Last month, iPass (News - Alert), a global provider of services that unify the management of enterprise mobility, announced that they are greatly expanding its Wi-Fi coverage in China through a partnership with Coordinate Technologies Communication.
