AT&T to Expand Embedded 3G Mini Laptop Lineup

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Looking to market its mini laptops aggressively, AT&T has announced that it will soon expand its portfolio of embedded 3G mini laptops, which soon will be available in AT&T (News - Alert) stores through nationwide sales channels.

The expanded embedded device lineup will include Acer, Dell (News - Alert) and Lenovo mini laptops. The company has already started testing the sale of 3G mini laptops in its retail stores, and based on its success there, AT&T says it plans to market the mini laptops through its Web site.

AT&T said that there is a huge untapped market for mini laptops. As the customers look for something smaller and better than laptop, companies such as AT&T and Sony are introducing mini laptops that cater to these demands. Many customer segments such as teens, young adults, moms on the go and small business owners are now willing to compromise on quality if they can get a light, sleek laptop to use as a backup.

“Sleek, mobile and fast is all the rage and we’re going to answer that call with a lineup of the hottest mini laptops in the market,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive officer, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “Pairing these laptops with AT&T’s home broadband, WiFi (News - Alert), and the nation’s fastest 3G network enables consumers and small business customers to get the most from their new devices.”

At just under 3 pounds, the ultraportable mini laptop is filled with standard laptop features for instant no-install Internet and e-mail access, word processing, or just enjoying on your favorite music. These laptops also provide 5 GB of domestic wireless data usage and access to thousands of AT&T WiFi hotspots.

Recently, an independent market research study stated that twice as many smartphone users have chosen AT&T over all other U.S. carriers. AT&T is the sole carrier for Apple’s ubiquitous iPhone (News - Alert) line, which at last count had ballooned to 30 million devices on the street around the world. In the United States, AT&T is the exclusive provider of the iPhone.
