Laureate Institute for Brain Research Selects Brocade Network for High-Performance Computing

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

The Laureate Institute for Brain Research, an organization that correlates clinical content, imaging and genetic data of the human brain, has selected Brocade solutions for its new 10 GbE edge-to-core healthcare networks and high-performance computing (HPC).

The research organization took the decision based on network performance, security and quality of service, savings in capital and operational costs.

“There are two main factors to our success: network performance and reliability,” said Alex Barclay, IT director at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research, in a statement. “Because we are processing high volumes of complex research, we cannot afford delays in intensive brain research modeling. Any type of network congestion or irregularity can translate to significant setbacks in medical breakthroughs.”

Laureate scientists use the Brocade (News - Alert) network to study how abnormalities in brain systems related to social understanding and eating behaviors lead to the development of mood, social and eating disorders. Since it is a government-funded organization, the Laureate Institute for Brain Research meets stringent HIPPA healthcare compliance regulations and helps prevent setbacks in research data.

The research organization required a secure networking platform to provide in-depth visibility into network security threats. The organization will utilize the network-wide embedded Brocade security solution for network intrusion detection and prevention. The research institute is able to detect, report and thwart network attacks across the entire network infrastructure in real time.

Network performance, security and quality of service were the primary driving factors for selecting Brocade. Equipment capital and operational costs also influenced the selection. The Institute selected Brocade to take advantage of its superior networking products and to avoid paying premiums for unnecessary features and support, according to company officials.

In September 2010, Brocade unveiled its 100 GbE solution to address the traffic surge experienced by carriers. The company also introduced the new MLXe Core Router as part of the Brocade MLX Series of high-density routers for service provider and data center networks.
