Scott Cleland, chairman of NetCompetition.org made headlines recently when he urged the Senate Commerce Committee and the Federal Communications Commission to allow the upcoming 700 MHz Spectrum auction to go forward without special interest provisions or government regulation.

 

His recommendation is significant in the backdrop of two proposals, one by Frontline Wireless and the other by Skype (News - Alert), asking for special provisions to allow the companies to gain spectrum outside of normal open auction process.

 

"The Frontline Wireless and Skype proposals effectively request special subsidy treatment," Scott Cleland commented. "They are asking the FCC (News - Alert) to rig the 700 MHz auction process to suit their own personal business models."

 

Cleland continued, "If these provisions are accepted, the largest beneficiaries will be the two companies themselves while the burden of a less competitive and less transparent market will be left with the consumer. We need to move forward with the auction as is -- because it is the most fair and free-market oriented way to allocate the spectrum."

 

In his recommendations, Cleland reminded the members of the Senate Commerce Committee the importance of keeping the Digital Transition on schedule as it is critical to bringing consumers new products and services, raising funds to federal Treasury and encouraging innovations in the private sector.
