iPhone App Ban of the Week: WiFi Hotspot Scans

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

We’re hearing reports that Apple is nixing iPhone (News - Alert) apps that find WiFi hotspots by actively scanning for them.

Starting now, you can no longer buy such apps in Apple’s store, are no longer welcome in Apple’s (News - Alert) App Store, according to Softpedia, noting that the ban does not apply to WiFi (News - Alert) locators that use a database of hotspots combined with GPS.

However, it does apply to apps like WiFi-Where (which Apple reportedly took issue with because it used a private framework to detect WiFi hotspots), WiFiTrack and WiFi Analyzer.

Apple was not immediately available for comment.

Nearly two weeks ago, it was revealed Apple began iPhone and iPod Touch applications with “overly sexual content” and notifying developers this week of their removal, according to multiple news reports.

“If we find these apps contain inappropriate material, we remove them and request the developer make any necessary changes in order to be distributed by Apple,” the Wall Street Journal quoted an Apple statement as saying.

There’s speculation the content cleanup is being done in anticipation of the iPad, which will include more content for families and schools than the other Apple gadgets.
