D-Link's Wireless USB Kit Obtains Wireless USB Certification

By Rahul Prabhakar, TMCnet Contributing Editor

D-Link (News - Alert), a designer, developer and manufacturer of networking and connectivity products, matches the needs of businesses ranging from small office/home office (SOHO), small to medium business (SMBs), and workgroups to large enterprise environments.

Recently the company was successful in securing the Wireless USB certification conferred by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) for its trademarked Wireless USB Kit. The kit comprises of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) USB Hub and Adapter.

D-Link is one of the first companies to obtain this coveted certification for Wireless USB devices. USB-IF evaluates new USB Wireless products via a Wireless USB Certification Program and grants certification to the products complying with its Wireless USB 1.0 Specifications.

Following approval from USB-IF, D-Link’s suite of wireless USB devices will be marked as Certified Wireless USB products, carrying the Certified Wireless USB logo.

Jeff Ravencraft, president at USB-IF, said in a statement, “The deployment of end-user products like D-Link's Wireless USB Hub and Adapter is vital when transitioning a new technology into the marketplace.”

“These types of products deliver the benefits of Certified Wireless USB to consumers, and allow them to maintain the investments made in their legacy PCs and devices. Consumers can also look forward to new Certified Wireless USB products with the technology built right in,” Ravencraft added.

The demand for wireless USB technology has shot up due to enhanced speed limits, which surpasses those of its predecessor like Bluetooth, and the ease with which it connects with devices, such as, printers, scanners, game controllers, digital cameras, notebooks, and PCs.

This distinction assures interoperability among certified Wireless USB peripherals, enhanced security, and compatibility with certified Wireless USB gear, such as scanners, digital cameras, external drives, and printers.

D-Link’s wireless USB devices are based on the latest Ultra-Wideband standards, providing better speeds compared to short-range wireless technologies and wider bandwidths capable of managing large amounts of data at relatively low power levels, from distances of up to 30 feet, and higher data rates up to 480 Megabits per second.

AJ Wang, chief technical officer at D-Link, stated, “The high data rate of the Ultra-Wideband wireless technology will enable consumers to transfer audio, video, and large data files from USB peripherals to their PCs more efficiently.”

“We’re proud to be among the first to receive Certified Wireless USB status and be able to offer a solution that is fully compatible with upcoming Certified Wireless USB products,” he concluded.

D-Link’s Wireless USB products extend the benefits and functionalities of Wireless USB to several wired USB devices as well. For instance, its DUB-9240 kit contains a wireless USB adapter as well as a 4-port wireless USB hub.

D-Link’s DUB-2240 4-port Wireless USB Hub when connected to a laptop or desktop PC via DUB-1210 Wireless USB adapter furthers the range of USB printers, scanners, and various other devices up to nearly 30 feet. It is capable of simultaneously supporting up to four devices.

D-Link expects to start shipping its DUB-2240 Wireless hub and DUB-1210 wireless adapter by the fourth quarter of this year. The price for both the hub and adapter has been fixed at $119.99 each as per the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). Its DUB-9240 Wireless USB Kit is expected to cost $219.99 (MSRP).
