Los Angeles School Deploys Xirrus 802.11n WiFi Arrays

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Los Angeles-based Marymount High School reportedly has deployed Xirrus 802.11n WiFi (News - Alert) Arrays in its campus in order to enhance wireless connectivity for its staff and students.

Xirrus, created a WiFi Array architecture that displaces overlay WiFi offerings and switched Ethernet to the desktop. Marymount High School is an independent Catholic college-preparatory school for girls in grades 9-12.

According to the school officials, Xirrus WiFi Arrays were deployed for WiFi devices capable of covering large areas, support extensive user population, and accommodate high bandwidth applications used around the campus and also have more throughput with less devices, cables and switch ports.

The school is starting its 1:1 computer initiative and needed a powerful and robust wireless network to give staff and students the same experience as that of the traditional wired network.

According to Patrick Lynch, Director of Technology at Marymount High School, unlike other vendors who try to sell based on slide-ware and predictive modeling, Xirrus cracked open their products to demonstrate the ingenious design, performed areal-world site survey, helped to create a comprehensive network design, and backed everything up with a signal strength guarantee.

“I think the most extraordinary thing about Xirrus was their follow up and follow through,” Lynch said. “From technicians, to site visits, to the roll out of our wireless solution, Xirrus has been there every step of the way to make sure the job got done right – very impressive.”

Xirrus has stated that Marymount high school now has a powerful 802.11n network, which is equivalent to Ethernet workgroup switch but only more flexible and capable of supporting an assortment of wireless educational tools and applications both now and in the future.

The WiFi array adds many advantages to the school campus. It can enhance network efficiency, lower latency, improve network throughput, and simplify network deployment by employing the intelligence at the edge of the network, rather than in a centralized controller.

“It’s great to see schools like Marymount using WiFi as the primary network connection for their students and staff – to learn and work where and when it is most productive,” said Scott Tomlinson, Regional Director at Xirrus.
