ADC Connects Ave Maria University

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Ave Maria University, a Catholic university located in southwestern Florida, is using ADC’s InterReach Fusion in-building wireless system to deliver strong and consistent multi-carrier cellular service throughout its campus facilities.

ADC’s (News - Alert) system is providing cellular services from Alltel, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon inside a 90,000 square foot library and campus center as well as three, 40,000 square-foot dormitories. Starting next year, the Catholic university also plans to provide coverage in a new, 120,000 square foot dormitory.

Ave Maria University was searching for a highly scalable system that could provide strong, uniform signal strength anywhere on campus, according to Wally Hedman, operations manager for the university. They decided upon ADC’s InterReach Fusion system that leverages active hubs and remote antenna units to extend signals over their campus fiber plant. The system’s architecture has given them the easy and cost-effective scalability they need to grow.

Before finalizing ADC, Hedman tried a cellular system based on thick coaxial cabling. He was not happy with the system because the signal attenuation made it difficult to provide strong signals within the campus library. Disappointed with the previous system, Hedman turned to Fusion system as it delivers strong signals at each remote antenna regardless of the antenna’s distance from the cellular signal source.

According to John Spindler, vice president of product management for ADC, university campuses worldwide have recognized that students and faculty need reliable cellular service wherever they go. He indicated that their InterReach Fusion system is a popular solution for bringing coverage within these institutions because it has the ability to deliver robust performance, high reliability, and very cost-effective deployment and management regardless of the size of the campus.

ADC recently launched FlexWave Prism, a new, compact radio head that simplifies the cost-effective enhancement of wireless networks in outdoor locations and large venues. The new product is based on patented technology and provides mobile operators with a small, light, and flexible solution for extending macro network coverage for 2G, 3G, and 4G services.
