iSkoot Puts Skype on Mobile Phones

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

iSkoot announced Tuesday that its software client has been Skype (News - Alert)-certified. The move will enable the software to be installed on mobile phones so that users can place and receive Skype calls from their handsets, without the need for PCs, special hardware, or WiFi hot spots.

"Skype's endorsement of iSkoot represents a significant benefit for the 136 million-plus Skype users who can now enjoy Skype on their cell phone, without needing PCs, special hardware or WiFi (News - Alert) hot spots," said iSkoot's CEO Jacob Guedalia in a statement.

According to iSkoot, users can install the company's software to either use local rates or minutes from their plans to speak to Skype contacts; or use SkypeOut to make lower-priced calls to any phone from their mobile devices. This will initially be made available in the US with more markets to follow.

The iSkoot client software will initially support the Motorola (News - Alert) RAZR phones and Symbian-based mobile phones.

"Skype is always looking for ways enrich people's lives and make our software easier to access and use," noted Eric Lagier, Skype's head of Business Development, Mobile. "iSkoot extends our reach while giving more mobility to our users who can now place and receive Skype calls straight from their mobile phones without needing WiFi. Skype's certification of iSkoot gives our users total confidence that it meets our high standards and is a delight to use."

Partners Skype and iSkoot had announced a major deal back in November to enable 3, a mobile operator, to launch a service which includes a pre-loaded version of Skype's software on Nokia and Sony Ericsson (News - Alert) handsets, as well as iSkoot's mobile client and network servers.

The 3 Group had recently built a new mobile broadband network. The company had marketed the network globally under the 3 brand. The group provides dual-mode 3G services.
