Recent improvements to broadband wireless access (BWA) technology is reinvigorating the question of where various technologies fit in the telecom market, a new research report by IDATE says.
“The biggest change in the BWA industry is undoubtedly the WiMAX ecosystem’s shift towards a new mobile standard,” the report said. “Alternative broadband wireless technologies have now been tested in actual conditions in many commercial deployments.”
The report also makes the following predictions:
- The development of light BWA equipment for urban deployments may enable newer providers to compete in densely populated regions
- Most evolutions in the mobile market will be CDMA and UMTS based, but other BWA technologies will gain traction for wireless data applications
- In order to meet increasing network capacity needs, several major operators may adopt an EV-DO+BWA or UMTS+BWA dual network strategy
Exactly how these predictions will, or won’t, play out remains to be seen. But the report surely is accurate in noting that, “Technology convergence, regulatory changes and increasing spectrum needs are creating an opportunistic environment, with all the players vying for the same spectrum.”
