Transnumeric Deploys Firetide Wireless Mesh Network at the Versailles Palace

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Firetide (News - Alert), Inc. has announced that integrator Transnumeric, has deployed a Firetide wireless mesh network at the Chateau de Versailles in Versailles, France.

The newly installed Firetide network is being used for transmission of cultural information through PDAs and headsets used by visitors. Firetide wireless mesh network enables self-guided tours, so visitors can listen to commentary on rented headsets and watch videos on PDAs as they stroll around the grounds.

Versailles Castle, built in the 1600s, is considered to be one of the largest palaces in the world, almost covering 80 square kilometers. According to Palace officials, three million tourists annually visit the palace and its gardens, statues, and fountains. The French Ministry of Culture and Communications wanted to provide its visitors with information without the help of army of docents and tour guides.

“The project would have been impractical without Firetide wireless mesh,” Jacques Tarrieu, founder and managing director at Transnumeric, said in a statement. “It would have been impossible to obtain permits for adding cabling in and around these historic buildings. The unobtrusive Firetide network allows us to maintain the purest nature of the buildings and grounds.”

Tarrieu pointed out that Firetide HotPort mesh nodes and antennae “blend in with the scenery” to satisfy strict guidelines monitored by Versailles architects. Nodes have been installed on rooftops, in a tree, and in a garden, and to reduce interference, the mesh nodes operate in the 5.4 GHz band.

“We are honored that Transnumeric and the French Ministry have chosen Firetide to support such an innovative design and use of our mesh infrastructure,” said Bo Larsson, CEO at Firetide. “Moreover, we are proud to play a key role in the pleasure and education of the millions of visitors to this royal and world-renowned site.”
