InterDigital Extends Contract with SK Telecom to Develop Mobile Wireless Handover Capability

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributing Editor

InterDigital, Inc. has announced it will extend collaboration with Korean-based SK Telecom (News - Alert) to develop advanced mobility solutions, which started a year ago.

According to the First Amendment of Development and Licensing Collaboration Agreement, new features will be added to enhance seamless mobility between different radio technologies, including WiBro, UMTS, and cdma2000.

Dr. Jae W. Byun, CTO of MNO Biz of SK Telecom commented, "We are very pleased with InterDigital's outstanding contributions on this breakthrough technology." He also added that the program would be directly aligned with SK Telecom's vision of an all IP, multi-radio access network.

SK Telecom has plans to expand its advanced mobile network across the country providing facilities for WiBro services throughout major cities in South Korea.

SK Telecom and InterDigital signed an agreement in 2006 to develop a network interoperability solution for its UMTS and WiBro networks which is based on InterDigital’s mobility standards, such as 3GPP UMTS and IEEE 802.21. InterDigital successfully delivered system design and the software solution for mobile devices to SK Telecom in 2007.

InterDigital, after signing this extended collaboration, is making improvements to the existing handover capabilities, adding full two-way handover between WiBro and UMTS, as well as two-way handover between WiBro and cdma2000. This agreement provides for potential collaboration on future projects as well.

Mark A. Lemmo, Executive Vice President, Business Development and Product Management, InterDigital said, "We are pleased SK Telecom, a pioneer in the deployment of visionary wireless broadband services, has chosen to expand our collaboration on the development of seamless handover between different wireless networks." He also added that the modular architecture is ideally suited for adding innovative services and capabilities which benefits SKT and its customers.
