Verizon (

Alert) is donating $10,000 to help the inhabitants of Vernonia, who were forced from their homes during the recent flooding in the Columbia County community.
"When people are in trouble, we want to help. We’ve worked hard to get phone service restored; now it’s time to help the community with its recovery efforts," Verizon’s Northwest Senior Vice President David S. Valdez, was quoted as saying.
Verizon is enabling flood victims a series of free calling services and the ability to have their telephone calls automatically forwarded to a working phone number to another location where they are staying, or to a wireless number. Customers will not be billed the one-time set-up fees or monthly charges for call-forwarding.
In the interim, Verizon has also reestablished a majority of the landline service for the public after the company’s central office
was flooded recently and has a 42 ft. cell-on-wheels trailer, which strengthens the company’s wireless network capabilities in the community.
Verizon Wireless has made 75 wireless phones readily available for use by crisis responders, community leaders and others concerned in directing the community recovery procedure.
"We appreciate all of the help Verizon is providing our community, and this money will go along way to helping people get their lives back to normal. The work Verizon’s employees are doing here to help people stay connected is second to none," Columbia County Commissioner Tom Hyde, commented.
