Firetide Launches WLAN Controller for Enterprise WiFi Access Networks

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Seeking to create WLAN opportunities for its flagship channel, Firetide (News - Alert) Inc., a developer of wireless mesh and access networks, reportedly has announced a so-called “WLAN Controller” that enables network-wide management and control of Firetide access points from a single interface.

Firetide says it’s looking to address a need that’s developing as convergence grows in the channel – where a single integrator, be it security or IT, now provides the entire spectrum of networking services to an enterprise.

Firetide channel partners can now meet requirements for full WLAN management capabilities and ubiquitous coverage with the help of requirements for full WLAN management capabilities and ubiquitous coverage. The partners can do this even in areas where access points cannot be hardwired. Providing always-on connection to workers, visitors or residents, Firetide now allows areas without existing infrastructure – such as parking garages, elevators, and outdoor spaces – to be covered.

The Firetide WLAN Controller is the latest addition to the Firetide WiFi (News - Alert) access solution. The solution includes Firetide Mobility Controller for client and infrastructure mobility, HotPoint access points, HotClient customer premises equipment, and HotView network management system.

Firetide designed its access solution to distribute intelligence at the edge by building on its extensive experience with wireless mesh backhaul, where bandwidth is precious. This provides better coverage and user experience with only a minimal amount of bandwidth taken up by critical management traffic to the centralized controller.

Firetide WLAN Controller includes features such as radio power management, WiFi coverage mapping and gap analysis, policy and user management, AAA functionality, mobility and security features. Integrated DHCP authentication services, plug-and-play access point configuration and zero-touch management.

“Firetide continues to innovate and extend the capabilities of its networks, advancing Firetide’s mission of reliable connectivity anywhere,” said Manish Chandra, a product manager at Firetide. “The ability to efficiently and cost-effectively manage WLANs is critical to the commercial success of wireless access deployments, while mesh backhaul enables the network to reach into areas that are cost-prohibitive or impractical to wire.”
