Sierra Wireless Intros Suite of EMConnect Firmware Features for OEMs

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Sierra Wireless has introduced EMConnect, a robust set of firmware features used in conjunction with Sierra Wireless’ (News - Alert) 3G embedded modules.

In addition to an expanded UART interface, EMConnect features include TCP/IP and UDP (News - Alert) packet assembler/disassembler, connection monitoring with auto-re-connect, modem setting persistency and GPIO support.

The suite of EMConnect features have been developed for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in industrial and enterprise markets, according to the company. For OEMs, the suite is expected to reduce development time, platform costs and dependence on host processors.

According to Trent Punnett, senior vice president for marketing and corporate development at Sierra Wireless, the enhancements being delivered through the new EMConnect firmware features make Sierra Wireless modules uniquely suited for OEM customers targeting the utilities and machine-to-machine markets.

Integrated into the module firmware, the suite of EMConnect features enable use of a Sierra Wireless embedded module as a stand-alone radio interface, said company officials.

The EMConnect firmware features allow Sierra Wireless 3G embedded modules to serve as standalone connections for machine-to-machine applications. Company officials said that this eliminates the need for a separate host processor in the device itself.

Sierra Wireless embedded modules are integrated into laptops, portable devices and fixed wireless terminals to provide a complete wireless data solutions over high-speed packet access (HSPA) and EV-DO Rev A networks.

Scheduled for a release this month, EMConnect features will be integrated into the latest 3G modules developed by the company: the MC8790V and MC8792V.

However, Sierra Wireless MC5727V modules with EMConnect firmware features are expected be available early in 2009.

Sierra Wireless provides modems and software that connect people and systems to mobile broadband networks.

In October, the company announced the availability of the AirLink Raven XE, a 3G Ethernet gateway that provides high speed wireless connectivity in a compact package. Powered by ALEOS and ARM9 processor, and equipped with a 10/100 Ethernet port, the Raven XE 3G Ethernet gateway is suited for applications requiring 24/7 remote monitoring and the capability to send and receive large files.
