GigaBeam's WiFiber Debuts in the UK

By Narayan Bhat, TMCnet Contributing Editor

High-speed wireless solutions provider GigaBeam has made its first sale in the United Kingdom. GigaBeam made the announcement last week that an unidentified client in Britain had placed a purchasing order for its WiFiber link.

GigaBeam, which recently moved its headquarters to Durham from Virginia, said the sale opened up a new market in its continued expansion of sales efforts overseas.

GigaBeam offers wireless data delivery at what it calls “wireless fiber optics” or, WiFiber, and says it is an alternative to traditional fiber.

GigaBeam WiFiber products operate in the 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz upper millimeter wave spectrum bands. The Federal Communications Commission and the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) and certain other countries have authorized this portion of the spectrum for licensed wireless commercial use.

“Europe represents a major market and revenue opportunity for GigaBeam and specifically in established economies such as the United Kingdom where wireless infrastructures represent an ideal solution for providing individuals and businesses with broadband Internet access,” said Louis Slaughter, chairman and chief executive officer of GigaBeam, in a statement.

GigaBeam's WiFiber technology is similar to that of terrestrial fiber in terms of speed and reliability. But it has an advantage over terrestrial fiber as it can be rapidly deployed at a cost far lesser than terrestrial fiber. Terrestrial fiber can take months to deploy and also requires regulatory and environmental approvals prior to installation.

“We are pleased with the progress we have made in these new markets based upon the frequency spectrum our founders pioneered along with the wireless technology we developed. We believe that in addition to follow on orders in these markets we will continue to open new and potentially lucrative markets in other countries around the world,” Slaughter added.

GigaBeam’s WiFiber allows customers to connect directly to any city’s fiber optics hub or Point-of-Presence (POP). The disruptive impact of this low cost alternative to fiber optics cables has turned out to be an instant hit, with more and more companies placing a purchasing order. WiFiber’s point-to-point high-speed units transmit data via the radio frequency at speeds equal to 1000 DSL lines.

GigaBeam partners and customers include computer and telecom giants such as Google, Verizon, ING and Sprint (News - Alert). The Department of Defense, as well as several cities and universities such as San Francisco and Boston University are also customers. The Company also says it is set to expand into major metropolitan areas around the world.
