Frontier Communications has introduced its first large wireless network in California, and by launching the service, is offering Web surfers in Elk Grove a chance to take their computers outdoors to go online.
Denise Baumbach, senior vice president and general manager at Frontier's Western region pointed out that the company and the city of Elk Grove coordinated its efforts to establish a series of wireless hot zones. He told reporters at a press conference, “The zones can serve Web surfers, both Frontier customers and non-customers, in a number of large Elk Grove parks and around key commercial and office areas of the city.”
The system, with the purchase of added equipment, Baumbach said, will enable police officers in the field to monitor high-quality video feeds from cameras in heavy traffic areas. Building inspectors will also benefit from the ability to remotely see information once available only in city offices.
Baumbach also noted that the service is available for purchase by non-Frontier customers who want a wireless connection for a limited time period, such as by the day or week. Frontier customers will also have to pay an additional fee to use the service, but at a much lower rate.
