Cingular's $86 Million Investment in Las Vegas

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

AT&T's (News - Alert) mobile arm Cingular Wireless announced on Tuesday that it made a reported 86 million dollars in total investments to upgrade and expand its services in the greater Las Vegas area for 2006.

The mobile operator had announced an initial $46 million investment in June of 2006, followed by an additional $40 million to total $86 million for the area's network upgrading plan. The investment added on to Cingular's (News - Alert) estimated $6 billion national network capital expenditure program for last year.

Cingular built 59 new cell sites, added coverage, enhanced high-speed 3G service and added network capacity in 2006. The wireless operator reportedly invested nearly $214 million and added 144 new cell sites in the area over the last two years.

Cingular mainly upgraded its service in North Las Vegas, Summerlin, Green Valley, Boulder City and along the I-15 freeway through Primm.

"2006 has proven to be an unprecedented year for us in greater Las Vegas," commented Tammi Terrell, vice president and general manager for the company's SD/LV/HI markets. "We completed a major expansion initiative and added to our 3G (third generation) high-speed network. That's an exceptional achievement that positions us for the future."

Today's news follows Cingular's announcement about its nearly $165 million investment for service upgrades and expansions during 2006 for the Georgia market, which includes portions of South Carolina, specifically Aiken, Bluffton and Hilton Head.

Cingular's  recently added offerings in Georgia include high-speed 3G service in Atlanta, 136 new cell sites and extra network capacity across the state.

Areas which are now enjoying the operator's network expansions in the Georgia market include Augusta, Statesboro, Columbus, Camden County, Savannah, Atlanta, Florida Parkway and Northeast Georgia (between Dalton and Greenwood); and South Carolina's Aiken.
