Nortel, Accela, Join Forces to Offer Wireless Solution to Municipalities

By Divya Narain, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Nortel (News - Alert), a leader in information and communications technology, has teamed up with Accela Inc., a provider of government enterprise management software solutions, to develop its Municipal Wireless Solution.

Nortel’s new Municipal Wireless Solution is a bouquet of wireless network technologies, applications and services which will allow municipalities to provide broadband services to their agency field staff as well as to citizens. Following the deal with Accela, Nortel will be able to utilize Accela Wireless, Accela’s mobile inspection management application, as an important constituent of its wireless solution.

“Through the Nortel and Accela collaboration, municipal agencies will have the ability to conduct and report on mission-critical tasks at a higher rate of efficiency than ever before, and seamlessly maintain a higher level of customer service,” said Charles Salameh, vice president, Nortel Global Solutions in a press release. “Accela’s proven expertise in mobile government solutions and our strong presence in the Municipal Wireless space will allow many new customers to experience the power of our combined solutions.”

Accela Wireless is perfect for Nortel’s wireless solution as it takes processing capabilities to the field and ensures the easy implementation of land use and asset management activities like inspections, investigations, code enforcement, work orders, and service requests. With the help of this application, inspectors can save a lot of time traveling back and forth the field thereby serving the citizens better. Rapid damage assessment is another area where the application comes in handy. Accela Wireless has already been implemented in over 60 cities and counties in the U.S. including Cleveland, New Orleans, and the state of Michigan. It has also been tested and certified by Nortel's municipal wireless innovation lab in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“As Wireless Mesh becomes more prevalent, agencies are looking for applications that help them keep up with the expectations of the public, and that generate revenue,” said Maury Blackman, Accela’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “Return on investment sometimes gets lost in the excitement of the technology, so it is important to establish partnerships like this one where we leverage each other's strengths to come up with solutions that are cost-effective and bring added value to agency services.”
