In order to address the growing need for WiMAX solutions—particularly in municipal deployments—France-based
Altitude Telecom and motorways operator
APRR have teamed up to form a consortium called
Maxtel, which offers an affordable system for wireless broadband.
Maxtel’s
AnyMAX system uses devices attached to street lamps that coordinate with a WiMAX base station to cover a town-wide or city-wide zone. The system draws power from the street lamps.
In a recent announcement, Maxtel said that, beginning in 2007, the starting cost of its installed base station will be less than $6,500, making this type of WiMAX deployment more affordable than ever.
Maxtel noted that installation of AnyMAX base stations needed to cover a city the size of Paris can be achieved in a fewer than three months.
Information about the AnyMAX system is available
here.
