ITT and Nortel Government Solutions Provide WiMAX for New FAA Air Traffic Control System

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

ITT Corporation and Nortel (News - Alert) Government Solutions will jointly pursue mobile WiMAX solutions that meet the requirements for a satellite-based air traffic control system the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans to deploy beginning in 2009.

ITT won an initial three-year, US$207 million contract by the FAA this August to develop and deploy an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system. As a key component of the FAA’s NextGen program the ADS-B system will address the growing needs of air transportation while increasing safety and efficiency.

Nortel Government Solutions and ITT Corporation will provide joint mobile WiMAX solutions based on the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.16-2005 standard. Nortel explains that the end products will feature secure and flexible radio frequency functionality from ITT Aerospace/Communications Division, WiMAX (News - Alert) infrastructure from Nortel, and integration and deployment services from Nortel Government Solutions.

Lou Dollive, president and general manager, ITT Aerospace/Communications Division said that they are confident this strong partnership will produce a highly flexible and adaptable capability to meet the needs of the FAA and fulfill a wide range of government communications needs to more effectively reach the end user.

Chuck Saffell, chief executive officer, Nortel Government Solutions said in a statement that working with ITT will enable them to extend the benefits of Nortel's leading-edge WiMAX expertise to the FAA and, ultimately, to other areas of the U.S. Federal Government.

Work with Nortel Government Solutions on WiMAX will reportedly be conducted by ITT's Aerospace/Communications Division located in Fort Wayne, Ind.

ITT Corporation supplies advanced technology products and services in several growth markets. The company plays a vital role in international security through its defense communications and electronics products; space surveillance and intelligence systems; and advanced engineering and related services.

Headquartered in Fairfax, Va., Nortel Government Solutions offers a one-stop shop for solutions designed to improve workforce productivity, reduce operating costs, and streamline inter-agency communications.
