Octasic Forms Team to Build Wireless Infrastructure Technologies

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Octasic Inc. an innovator of media processing solutions announced that it has formed a Software Defined Radio (SDR) development group which will provide wireless solutions based on the low power Opus DSP technology suitable for current and emerging wireless markets.

Opus offers a standard programming model providing a rich instruction set which takes care of both traditional DSP functions and also header processing and task management code. The Opus IDE includes a complete suite of development tools like C compiler, profiler and debugger. It offers a robust graphical development environment with a short learning curve enabling developers to re-target their legacy code according to this platform.

Octasic (News - Alert) has assembled a team of expert wireless engineers from the countries of France, Spain, China, India and Canada to be led by Emmanuel Gresset as vice president of Software Defined Radio (SDR). The team based in Montreal is involved in designing low-power DSP solutions for wireless infrastructure.

Gresset worked for STMicroelectronics (News - Alert) before joining Octasic. At STM he managed strategic development for the Wireless Infrastructure Division. He is well experienced in the design of voice and wireless modems, digital signal processors, and System on Chip (SoC) architectures.

This wireless initiative from Octasic is based on baseband signal processing solutions for wireless infrastructure platforms required for femtocells and other applications including base stations. Octasic is expected to debut its fully soft baseband solution suitable for GSM/EDGE radio base stations at the GSMA Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) in Barcelona between the 16th and 19th of February.

“Octasic has a strong history in DSP innovation and development,” said Gresset. “The SDR team will expand on Octasic’s strengths in multimedia voice and video gateways by adding development platforms for the next generation of multi-standard wireless products that will address the needs of software-defined baseband processors for 2G, 3G and 4G basestations.”

The company’s wireless program leverages its unique and advanced Opus DSP technology. Its core offers high flexibility which improves performance, reduces power consumption and offers an extensible and programmable design platform.

Octasic Inc. provides media and wireless modem processing silicon and software solutions required by the converged carrier, enterprise and end-point communication equipment markets. The VoIP and multi-standard wireless base station DSP solutions are based on Opus asynchronous DSP architecture. The solutions enable equipment manufacturers to reduce system costs by increasing the density and enhancing the performance by reducing the power consumption.
