Florida Atlantic University Unveils Tecore Networks Wireless Laboratory

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

The Florida Atlantic University announced the opening of the Tecore Networks Wireless Laboratory at a ribbon-cutting ceremony during the inauguration of its new College of Engineering and Computer Science building.

Company sources added that this new 97,000 sq. ft., “living learning laboratory” will be the first academic building in the State of Florida that has been designed and built in accordance with LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum level standards.

The Tecore (News - Alert) lab will include a live mobile network that can be leveraged for conducting demonstrations and other testing purposes using standards like GSM and CDMA. This is expected to enable students, faculty and representatives of major cellular carriers to collaborate on education, research and development of innovative new services, and applications such as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and managed access.

Tecore Networks sources revealed that the company donated over $1 million in equipment and endowments to fund research and development and general lab operational expenses. This ensures that the Tecore Networks Wireless Laboratory will serve as a multi-technology learning center supporting higher education in the United States.

In a press release, Karl K. Stevens, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at FAU, said, “As the premier showcase in the State of Florida for the latest innovations in sustainability, our ‘living-learning laboratory’ is the ideal environment for education and research in the technologies which power our economy and society.”

“As wireless is clearly an industry with tremendous and increasing significance in the world, we deeply appreciate Tecore’s contribution of an entire laboratory dedicated to this critical area of technology,” Stevens added.

Jay Salkini, Tecore’s President and CEO, as well as FAU alumnus and Hall of Fame inductee, emphasized the need for technology, which stands for American competitiveness. He pointed out the need for future generations to maintain that strength for the long term. “FAU provided me with the technical education that helped me launch my career. I am delighted to be able to give back to my alma mater by providing a platform for today’s students to further their education in an applied manner,” Salkini noted.

Well known for its multi-technology 2G, 3G and 4G mobile network infrastructure, Tecore Networks provides commercial carriers, government agencies and the armed forces with communications systems based on the GSM, CDMA, UMTS and LTE (News - Alert) standards.
