Devicescape Intros New App, Eases iPhone Browsing Experience

By Michelle Robart, TMCnet Editor

Devicescape Software, a company that develops software for wireless networking primarily based on the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.11 standard, has made browsing the Internet even easier for iPhone and iPod Touch users thanks its new Serengeti application.

Currently available for download from the Apple App Store, this application makes Wi-Fi access more available.

Before gaining access to Serengeti, you will need to install Devicescape Easy Wi-Fi on your phone, now with Serengeti too. According to Devicescape Software, Serengeti is a “smart” Safari browser that will even log you in to your Wi-Fi network before you begin searching the Web.

The Devicescape Easy Wi-Fi for the iPhone and iPod touch connects users to Wi-Fi hotspots. By adding the Serengeti app to their iPhone, a user becomes instantly connected to the Safari browser and stays connected.

To begin using Serengeti, you will first need to download the application from the Apple (News - Alert) App Store. The app is currently offered for free and once launched it will ask you to enter your Easy Wi-Fi username and password. This ensures that Serengeti will log you into all your accounts.

If you do not have an Easy Wi-Fi account, you can sign up from Serengeti at the App Store or online at my.devicescape.com. Every time you enter a Wi-Fi hotspot and want to surf the Internet, just simply start Serengeti.

In addition, users can download extra Easy Wi-Fi applications for PCs and Windows Mobile and Nokia (News - Alert). Nokia also retails Easy Wi-Fi for Nseries and Eseries handsets via their on-line Download! Catalog.

A recent report conducted by marketing research services provider Decipher on behalf of Devicescape and other Wi-Fi leaders, gained insight from more than 2,700 Wi-Fi users who shared their opinions about Wi-Fi.

The survey, “Devicescape Wi-Fi Report,” posed several questions to a variety of Devicescape’s members, a group that includes both professionals and students from around the world.

Some of the key findings of the report include:
-- 91 percent of Wi-Fi users expect Wi-Fi while on the road.
-- 84 percent of respondents want citywide Wi-Fi and 56 percent do not mind paying for it.
-- When traveling, respondents claim to use their smartphones more than their laptops to access Wi-Fi.

Additionally, despite all the hype 3G has been receiving, 81 percent of smartphone users prefer using Wi-Fi for browsing Web sites, downloading data, Google (News - Alert) searches and sending e-mail.

The majority, or 86 percent of respondents, want OEMs to build Wi-Fi into their handsets and 82 percent want the service provider to provide an overall 3G/Wi-Fi data package.

Most of the U.S. report findings aligned with data from the UK and mainland Europe, but one notable difference is that Nokia is the most used device to tap into Wi-Fi, more than laptops and iPhone users.

“This data reflects the fact that people recognize that Wi-Fi – a technology they know and love on PCs and home entertainment systems – is also a great way to stay connected with their handsets,” said Kelly Davis-Felner, marketing director of the Wi-Fi Alliance (News - Alert). “Wi-Fi delivers a terrific user experience for web surfing, downloading multimedia content, and doing voice calls, so it has become a must-have feature on all the coolest phones.”

Devicescape currently has more than 90 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and service provider customers, hundreds of design wins and millions of units shipping, all serving to further drive the adoption of its technology in the Wi-Fi market for handsets and PCs.

In January, the company announced it had surpassed the one million membership mark, crediting this success to new contracts signed with OEMs and service providers.
