Spectrum Offers Physical Layer Implementations of Military and Satellite Communications Waveforms

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

As part of its SDR portfolio of products and services, Spectrum Signal Processing by Vecima (News - Alert) ("Spectrum"), will reportedly offer physical layer implementations of military communications (MILCOM) and satellite communications (SATCOM) waveforms, including key U.S. Joint Tactical Radio Systems (JTRS) and NATO waveforms.

By collaborating with industry leaders in the development of waveform technology, Spectrum (News - Alert) will provide a selection of key waveforms and waveform components that have been pre-ported to Spectrum’s modem platforms. Spectrum will thus be able to deliver integrated solutions that significantly reduce technical risk, development cost and time to deployment in its customers' radio programs.

Mark Briggs, VP Marketing at Spectrum said that their company is focused on accelerating their defense and satellite communications customers' programs, from development to deployment, with optimized radio technologies and end-to-end services. He explained that waveforms are a key part of this strategy and by partnering with established waveform leaders in the military, satellite and commercial communication markets, Spectrum will be able to deliver highly optimized and high value integrated radio solutions to its customers that can dramatically simplify and reduce development and implementation efforts.

Cyrus Sy, product manager at Spectrum said in a statement that the addition of key physical layer waveforms is the latest in Spectrum’s modular architecture approach, providing more choice to customers and enabling them to customize their solution.
Sy indicated that this offering will appeal to both radio developers, who will benefit from having a standard waveform already ported to a platform, and waveform developers, who wish to implement a waveform and possibly make customizations to it.

A waveform is the entire set of radio and/or communications functions that occur from the user input to the radio frequency output and vice versa. The waveform physical layer, is the layer within the wireless protocol stack in which the radio frequency, intermediate frequency, and baseband signal processing occur. Often the effort involved in developing these physical layer waveform components for a radio platform is quite high.

By using Spectrum’s off-the-shelf modem solutions with pre-ported physical layer components customers can avoid investing in expensive waveform development efforts. This allows them to focus their resources on more critical parts of their radio programs. Spectrum also plans to offer a simple and cost-effective licensing structure for all waveform components, which will minimize the cost and complexity that can be associated with acquiring waveform IP from a COTS vendor.
