Qualcomm Signs Licensing Agreement with TeamCast to Expand MediaFLO Ecosystem

By Niladri Sekhar Nath, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Qualcomm (News - Alert) Incorporated, a developer of advanced wireless technologies and mobile data solutions, has licensed its FLO modulator software to France-based TeamCast, a company that develops equipment for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) serving the mobile TV transmission industry.

Thanks to the licensing agreement, TeamCast will be able to accelerate development of FLO-compliant modulators for mobile TV transmissions, which can then be easily integrated into third-party transmitter equipment.

In addition, the licensing agreement will further expand the MediaFLO ecosystem by allowing MediaFLO technology to be deployed by global transmitter companies.

TeamCast has developed two new products in its ModulCast family of modulators that will meet the requirements of the Forward Link Only (FLO) air interface standard as specified by the FLO Forum and standardized by the Telecommunications Industry Association: the MFL-1000 and MFL-2000.

The new modulators integrate the field-programmable gate array software so that third-party manufacturers can develop FLO-compliant transmission equipment.

“The Modulcast product family includes a range of modules specially designed for easy integration into professional broadcast equipment, enabling fast, cost-effective deployment of MediaFLO products and services,” said Jean-Luc Pavy, CEO, TeamCast in a statement to the press.

“The open MediaFLO mobile broadcast standard is now supported by an increasing number of equipment vendors and software developers in Europe, and this agreement further enhances the ecosystem surrounding the technology.”

Mike Coad, vice president of partner relations, Qualcomm MediaFLO Technologies also commented, "This agreement enables transmitter companies from around the globe to participate in MediaFLO trials and commercial deployments. Qualcomm is committed to the worldwide mobile broadcast industry, providing an open platform that gives ecosystem players the benefit of new revenue opportunities. We look forward to working with TeamCast, FLO Forum members and other interested companies to bring MediaFLO mobile TV products and services to the market.”
