AFS Announces Successful Expansion of Fiber Optic Metro Network

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

American Fiber Systems (AFS), a provider of private optical networks, has announced the successful expansion of its fiber optic metro network in the Salt Lake City area.

The expansion is concentrated in West Jordan, which is one of the fastest growing cities in Utah. The existing AFS fiber optical network will be linked to a major wireless provider in the area through the expansion. With this newly constructed ring, enterprise and carrier customers can benefit from better services through the 500+ fiber miles of high-capacity, high-bandwidth metropolitan fiber.

"We're raising the bar for other bandwidth providers in the area," Mike D'Angelo, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at AFS, was quoted as saying in the report. "I believe every business in the Salt Lake City/West Jordan area that uses more than 10mb of bandwidth today will appreciate having a new, easy-to-do-business-with vendor to consider for highly reliable data connections."

The company had developed the new network in such a way that it is different from other telecom providers. Consequently, customers benefit from true redundancy and the highest degree of reliability. AFS is expanding its network in commercial districts witnessing rapid growth, such as Jordan Landing, by connecting to area data centers.

AFS’ objective has always been to introduce connectivity in cities that were earlier under-served by other network operators. The new network is the only dark fiber network in the West Jordan/Salt Lake City area. It offers businesses a reliable, private alternative to the local exchange carrier.

The expansion hasn’t been limited to the Salt Lake City fiber optical network alone. AFS has significantly increased the coverage and capacity of its metro networks in Las Vegas, Reno, Carson City, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Nashville, Cleveland and Atlanta markets.
