McKesson Opts for BIO-key Biometric Identification Technology

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

BIO-key International, a provider of finger-based biometric identification and wireless public safety solutions, has announced that McKesson Provider Technologies is deploying BIO-key’s WEB-key biometric identification technology. The company will look to improve the security and convenience of access to medication dispensing cabinets with this agreement.

McKesson will now have the tools to expand its deployment to add finger print biometrics into other personnel authentication applications. The company will be able to improve the system to replace usernames and password authentication for any current workflow process. This will improve security and convenience for users accessing a secure area in the hospital or accessing confidential patient records.

To authenticate the identity of users accessing patient medications, McKesson will incorporate BIO-key’s award-winning WEB-key technology into the AcuDose-Rx system. Now, users do not need to rely on passwords, which can be easily forgotten or compromised as they now have the superior accuracy of the WEB-key biometric authentication software for their help.

BIO-key stated that the company is pleased to work with McKesson, an international leader in healthcare systems and solutions. The company states that McKesson will improve the security, convenience and cost of managing drug and material distribution by adopting BIO-key’s biometrics.

“By selecting BIO-key’s finger print identification technology, the AcuDose-Rx FastEntry biometrics option provides our customers with unique, industry-leading capability,” said Jeff Thompson (News - Alert), product manager for McKesson’s Automation Solution Group.

“The NIST-certified algorithm provides positive user identification for security and supports one-touch rapid access to the cabinet. Our customers also value the ability to enroll multiple finger prints from each user so the use of biometrics is not compromised by minor trauma to any one finger. FastEntry is one of many noteworthy enhancements in McKesson’s latest Connect-Rx software version, which also includes significant enhancements to expand the safety, security, and operational efficiency of AcuDose-Rx,” added Thompson.
