With the launch of the new Telecom New Zealand's Mobile Broadband CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A upgrade, New Zealanders will now enjoy access to mobile broadband technology, courtesy of the newly formed Alcatel (News - Alert)-Lucent conglomerate.
Mobile Broadband Rev. A is capable of reaching download speeds of 800Kilobits per second (Kbps) and average upload speeds of around 300Kbps. It also employs CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A technology, which, according to Alcatel-Lucent, is the next step up in the development path for the CDMA 1xEV-DO network behind Telecom's current Mobile Broadband offering. The upgrade has already been carried out by Alcatel-Lucent, which is now in charge of also managing the telecom's mobile data network.
"New Zealand is one of the first countries in the world to have this technology, which makes possible a whole new world of real-time mobile services," said Telecom New Zealand's chief operating officer, Business Simon Moutter in a statement released on Monday. "It offers super-fast mobile data speeds for both downloading and uploading data, which means that wherever they are, customers will be able to use their notebooks, laptops and other mobile devices to enjoy services such as video conferencing, multi-player gaming, and streaming video.
Mobile Broadband Rev. A is currently available in the Auckland CBD area. The telecom plans to make the service available in other metropolitan areas starting early next year.
"This is one of the first deployments in the world of EV-DO Revision A, and the rapid growth of EV-DO subscribers beyond New Zealand means a ready demand for new applications and services based on the technology. We can expect to see some very exciting developments and it’s fantastic that New Zealand and New Zealanders will be at the forefront of them," said Hilary Mine, head of Alcatel-Lucent's Australasia Regional Unit.
Today's news comes on the heels of Alcatel-Lucent's announcement about it introducing on Friday a managed Mobile Interactive TV service in the Asian Pacific market. The service will enable content and service providers to offer a managed business model in a speedy manner.
Alcatel-Lucent will deploy, host and operate its new Mobile Interactive TV service while content and service providers develop service marketing programs. The service also features an open environment for content aggregation to for mobile channels.
The service's features also comprise interfaces with fast channel zapping which can accommodate a range of handset configs and network delivery methods including 3G circuit switched, packet switched or broadcasted.
