AT&T Releases Personalized Radio Service

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

AT&T (News - Alert) Inc. has launched Pandora, a popular and rapidly growing Internet radio service on select wireless phones from AT&T.

Pandora helps AT&T's wireless customers to search for new music, listen to their favorite artists and create their own personalized radio stations on their mobile phones.

With Pandora, users need only enter the song title or the name of the artist and within a few seconds are delivered a personalized radio station over the air to their wireless handsets with songs that match the same sound and style as their search. The songs are chosen based on the Music Genome Project.

Pandora's system utilizes highly trained musicians to analyze music, one song at a time. The musicians analyze numerous musical qualities of each recording, such as melody, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation, arrangement, lyrics and vocals. The analysis is later used to create the listener's personalized radio stations. The songs heard can later be rated, either with a simple "thumbs up" or "thumbs down". This will help in further refinement of the stations' playlist to suit the listeners taste.

In addition to this, Pandora also allows users to pause or skip songs that they don't want to hear. AT&T customers can also bookmark a song to save the song name and artist. The bookmark will be the reminder for a subscriber to purchase the song later on the AT&T Mobile Music Store.

Pandora is now available on eight AT&T phones - the Samsung SYNC, a717 and a737, the Motorola (News - Alert) V3xx and RAZR 2, LG trax and existing LG CU400 and CU405 models. In order to gain access, users can just click the music icon on the device and then shop applications.

Pandora is available for a free trial for the first five days. Post the trial period, it costs $8.99 a month. AT&T also recommends the selection of a MEdia Max bundle, which offers unlimited mobile Web-browsing with MEdia Net as well as unlimited access to streaming video, CV and basic content. The MEdia Max bundle is $19.99 a month and includes 200 text messages.
