Cree GaN WiMAX Devices Being Used With Array Wireless Power Amplifiers

By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Cree Inc. announced that its new GaN HEMT WiMAX devices are providing critical size and energy benefits for Array Wireless Inc.’s new Powerlinear power amplifiers. The GaN HEMTs deliver a 25-percent smaller solution with at least twice the energy efficiency of competing systems.

Array’s Powerlinear amplifiers are now being used in blimps and in aircraft to provide television and broadcast feeds of Sunday Night Football on NBC. Smaller and lighter power amplifiers are generally being used more successfully in a number of applications like airborne high-definition broadcasting.

The Powerlinear series works with the requirements of digital modulation formats like Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM). The power amplifiers can operate in a variety of bands from UHF to C and are also optimized for the Nextel Broadcast Auxiliary Service (BAS) frequency location programs currently underway.

The power amplifiers are also a good fit for other targeted communications applications including unmanned aerial vehicles and ground vehicles, WiMAX base stations, law enforcement and secure mobile military communications.

“The Powerlinear amplifiers are designed to be ultra-linear and ultra- power efficient,” said Ed Takacs, Array Wireless president, in a press release. “With the new Cree (News - Alert) GaN HEMT devices, our amplifiers use half the power of competing systems and are significantly smaller in size, both of which are critical benefits for wireless applications where space and weight are at a premium.”

”Cree’s new GaN HEMT devices reduce power consumption in a variety of wireless applications. They can also significantly reduce the size and complexity of amplifiers, providing greater benefits in targeted power amplifier applications,” said Jim Milligan, Cree product manager for wireless products.
