TIA Updates Wireless IP Network Standards

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The Telecommunications Industry Association (News - Alert) (TIA), a group focused on advocacy, standards development, business development and intelligence for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, has recently updated the TIA (News - Alert)-835-C cdma 2000 Wireless IP Network Standard.

This standards series defines requirements for the support of wireless packet data networking capability on a third generation wireless system that is based on cdma 2000. It also defines the two methods for accessing public networks (Internet) and private networks (intranets).

These two methods include Simple IP and Mobile IP. The standards series also describes the required Quality of Service, Security, Mobility Management and Accounting capabilities necessary to support both methods.

In order to minimize the number of new protocols required and to maximize the utilization of well-accepted standards, Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) protocols are widely employed.

The updated standard is organized into six parts. Certain parts of the new standard address capabilities that are common to both Mobile IP and Simple IP. Others may describe capabilities applicable to a specific IP access service.

The parts included in this series are:

TIA-835.1-C-2 [E]: Introduction
TIA-835.2-C-2 [E]: Simple IP and Mobile IP Services
TIA-835.3-C-2 [E]: Packet Data Mobility and Resource Management
TIA-835.4-C-2 [E]: Quality of Service and Header Reduction
TIA-835.5-C-2 [E]: Accounting Services and 3GPP2 RADIUS VSAs
TIA-835.6-C-2 [E]: PrePaid Packet Data Services

This latest standard was formulated under the cognizance of TIA TR-45 Mobile & Personal Communications Systems (News - Alert), TR-45.6 Subcommittee on cdma2000 Adjunct Wireless Packet Data Technology.

To obtain copies of the document, contact IHS (News - Alert) International at +1.800.854.7179 (United States and Canada); +1.303.397.7796 (international) or visit global.ihs.com.

The TIA represents the global information and communications technology (ICT) industry through standards development, advocacy, tradeshows, business opportunities, market intelligence and global environmental regulatory analysis.

The organization focuses on enhancing the business environment for broadband, mobile wireless, information technology, networks, cable, satellite and unified communications. Members’ products and services are designed to empower communications in every industry and market, including healthcare, education, security, public safety, transportation, government, the military, the environment and entertainment.
