UK mobile VoIP provider Vyke has made a move to give customers an alternative to the rampant text message price gouging they may be familiar with. The introduction of the new version of Vyke Pro, released today, will allow mobile users with limited-access internet service to send free text messages.
Previously, the typical cost for a standard 160 character text message has been approximately 12p. While many UK consumers may think of this as an affordable way to communicate, it actually breaks down to about 750 pounds per megabyte.
The upgrade to Vyke Pro is offered free to all Vyke users. In order to maintain uninterrupted service, customers are asked to upgrade before the end of the month. An easily downloadable program, Vyke Pro is compatible with Java enabled handsets, and uses smart message routing technology.
The announcement represents the first of two major accessibility upgrades Vyke has in the works. The second, scheduled to be launched in October for Microsoft and Symbian ( News - Alert)-based phones, will reportedly provide full mobile VoIP functionality to WiFi enabled handsets that either don’t have inherent VoIP capabilities, or have had their functionality removed by incumbent operators.
