Huawei to Supply 3G Equipment to Leap Wireless

By Kumar Amitav Chaliha, TMCnet Contributing Editor

China 's Huawei Technologies is really going places these days. It has signed an agreement with U.S. wireless carrier Leap Wireless to supply 3G telecom equipment.

The development comes on the heels of the Chinese firm bagging orders to supply 3G equipment to Vodafone in Spain and eMobile in Japan.

Under the agreement, Huawei will deploy a CDMA 3G network for Leap to support its Cricket wireless services in Spokane, WA., Boise, ID., and Reno, NV, a statement said.

Huawei will sell its CDMA2000 1X and EV-DO Rev A solution to Leap, including a BTS and IP-based CDMA softswitch. The BTS features open framework, broadband platform and professional radio-frequency technologies. Huawei claims the CDMA softswitch solution which is based on the distributed technology of traffic control and bearer, offers advantages such as large capacity and high integration. IP transmission solution enables operators to reduce transmission costs significantly, it says.

"We are honored that Huawei has earned an award in the United States from a key carrier such as Leap Wireless," said Ken Hu, Chief Sales and Services Officer of Huawei. "We are excited at the long-term prospects associated with this partnership. Huawei will consistently provide innovative and customized products and services to create long-term value and potential growth for Leap."

Glenn Umetsu, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of Leap added: "We selected Huawei as a strategic partner based on its successful technical certification in our network, its outstanding product roadmap, and our common focus on quality and cost leadership."

Leap, together with its wholly owned subsidiaries, is a wireless communications carrier that provides digital wireless service in the U.S. under the brands Cricket and Jump Mobile. It operates in 19 states and has 1,668,000 customers.

In late July, Huawei signed an agreement with Japanese mobile operator eMobile to deploy Japan's first ever all IP-based HSDPA radio access network. It will initially be deployed in larger metropolitan areas like Sendai and Sapporo and later extended throughout the country.

Earlier this month, Vodafone picked Huawei to deliver and install the radio access part of its WCDMA/ 3G broadband (HSDPA) network for certain key cities in Spain.

Huawei is China's largest provider of telecom equipment. It has secured 30 WCDMA/HSDPA worldwide contracts to date. Its previous sales in the U.S. were to companies such as NTCH Inc., the operator of a service called ClearTalk, and to Hibernia Atlantic.
