Kite Networks and JiWire to Offer Free WiFi Internet during Bowl Game Week

By Divya Narain, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Kite Networks, Inc., in collaboration with JiWire, is going to offer free WiFi Internet service throughout the city of Tempe, Arizona during the Bowl Game Week starting January 2, 2007. Over 100,000 spectators are expected to throng the city during the Bowl Game Week football games.

The users of the free service will be greeted with a Web page that will provide targeted advertising and location-specific content enabled by JiWire’s comprehensive database of WiFi (News - Alert) hotspot and citywide hotzone locations.

City dwellers as well as visitors will be able connect to the service by accessing the WazTempe WiFi network named “BowlWeekFree” on WiFi enabled notebooks, phones, and PDAs.

Kite Networks, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bethesda, Md. based MobilePro Corp., a wireless broadband company that boasts over 240,000 total customer lines.

“We were the first to implement a border to border citywide wireless network in Tempe and we are now proud to provide the first complimentary WiFi broadband Internet access for a special event as a community service at no cost to the city,” noted Jerry Sullivan, president and chief executive officer of Kite Networks in a statement to the press.

“Kite is taking WiFi technology to the next level by providing free broadband Internet access for a limited time to all visitors and residents of Tempe. Kite will benefit as well by gathering valuable statistics on usage patterns, advertising and content demand, and network functionality. Likewise, we plan to offer free WiFi service during other special one-time events throughout various Kite Networks service areas in the future,” added Sullivan.

JiWire has taken to calling themselves the WiFi 2.0 company. “The delivery of location-aware advertising and content is the hallmark of WiFi 2.0 and a quantum improvement in the WiFi experience. WiFi users in Tempe during Bowl Game Week will see first-hand the benefits that WiFi 2.0 environments deliver,” explained JiWire CEO Kevin McKenzie.
