To further improve their foothold in unified wireless networking, Cisco (
News -
Alert) will purchase spectrum intelligence technology provider, Cognio Inc.
Cognio offers spectrum analysis and management for wireless networks. With their technology it is possible to improve performance and reliability of wireless networks.
Subject to various standard closing conditions, the acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of Cisco's 2008 fiscal year.
Adding this to the list of other Cisco acquisitions (this is No. 122 for Cisco and the first one in fiscal year 2008.) in the wireless networking space, Cisco can leverage the technology to enter new markets and grow their wireless networking offerings.
"With a strong product and technology portfolio and consistent innovation from a talented group of engineers, Cognio has emerged as the leader in spectrum intelligence technology," said Brett Galloway, vice president and general manager of the Wireless Networking Business Unit, Cisco in a statement to the press.
As more and more businesses today find value in mobility and wireless capabilities, the wireless spectrum has become and increasingly important corporate asset. These networks are tasked with performing optimally as well as offering security.
With the technology offered by Cognio, it is possible to ensure security and reliability of wireless networks as the technology works to detect, classify and locate mitigating sources of radio frequency
(RF) interference.
"Wireless spectrum is a strategic asset for our customers, and its management is key to the robust delivery of mobility applications. Cognio's innovation in spectrum intelligence will help ensure Cisco continues to differentiate our ability to deliver our customers rich and dependable end-user mobility experiences," also commented Galloway.
Once the acquisition is closed, Cisco has said it will integrate Cognio into its Wireless Networking Business Unit, under the Ethernet
and Wireless Technology Group.
