AT&T (
News -
Alert) is set to invest more than $35 million in their Connecticut wireless network this year, brining up its three-year investment in the network to $105 million.
Money will be used for adding new cell sites, expanding high-speed wireless broadband service (3G
), and purchasing 150 new radio access devices to be deployed at cell sites throughout the state.
In a bid to increase capacity of its networks, AT&T has also said it has plans to deploy power amplifiers.
The wireless operator hopes the enhanced network may enable it to accelerate its consumer video offering as well as broadband access.
"More than a hundred years ago, we were home to the very first telephone switchboard, and today's investments in the speed and ubiquity of connectivity in the state are vital to the economy. This significant AT&T commitment to Connecticut will benefit consumers and businesses alike as they seek to connect through wireless mobile networks”, commented Matt Nemerson, the president and CEO of the Connecticut Technology Council.
The network enhancement program will focus largely on expanding the network's voice capacity and strengthening the EDGE Data network so that the company can gain additional bandwidth to cope with its growing customer base and increased network voice and data usage.
This year, AT&T has already turned on three new cell sites in the state, including two sites in Hamden -- one that provides coverage along Route 40 and another on Route 10 between Hamden and Cheshire. The third site, in Barkhamsted, provides coverage along Route 44 east of Winsted. And has plans to set up five additional cell sites for Connecticut this year alone. The new cell sites will cater to the needs of consumers living in Greenwich and surrounding areas.
AT&T's 3G network supports several new services today, such as Video Share, which allows users to share live, real-time video while speaking on their wireless phones.
AT&T will roll out expanded 3G wireless network coverage in New London later this year, providing customers with continuous 3G coverage from the New York border to the Rhode Island border.
