Seeking to appeal to consumers’ environmental concerns in an election year and at a time of high energy costs, a Fountain Valley, California-based company said today that it’s breaking new ground in WiFi router development.

The company’s president and chief executive officer, Steven Joe, says the move catapults D-Link into the forefront of innovative, power-saving technology that doesn’t sacrifice performance or functionality.
“By offering green upgrades to some of our most popular Wi-Fi routers, we’re helping protect the environment while our customers save money in the process,” Joe said.
Here’s how it works, company officials say.

The D-Link routers also feature WiFi scheduling that allows customers to easily program when radio signals are turned on and off to save energy consumption even more, according to the company.
D-Link products that include the technology include the Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-655), Xtreme N Duo Media Router (DIR-855), and the Xtreme N Gaming Router (DGL-4500), according to the company. They cost $150 to $360, according to the company.
The routers also support IPv6, a larger address space that allows for greater flexibility ni routing traffic.
D-Link officials say their products save the most energy when used with their WiFi Scheduler, which providers the radio shutdown option.
“Under the most favorable conditions with no wired links active and Wi-Fi turned off, users may achieve the following power savings when compared to a D-Link conventional router without Green technology: DIR-655, up to 32 percent; DIR-855, up to 41 percent; and DGL-4500, up to 31 percent,” company officials say.
Officials from D-Link say the WiFi router series is the latest in a series of environmentally friendly products from their company. The company says it recycles and has distributed an industry brief about conservation.

“The time is right to offer consumers and organizations innovative green technologies that embrace environmental concerns, offer cost savings and maximize performance,” Joe said.
