Alcatel-Lucent ( News - Alert) has announced that its latest generation of GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio equipment has been purchased by Closed Joint Stock Company SMARTS (SMARTS) to upgrade and expand its existing wireless network in several parts of Russia. The implementation, which will be carried out in multiple phases, is expected to mostly be concluded by April 2008.
With Alcatel-Lucent’s cutting-edge GSM/GPRS/EDGE solution, SMARTS will be able to enhance its coverage and network capacity in Penza, Samara and Saratov, as well as the republics of Tatarstan and Bashkortostan. The solution will also help SMARTS to upgrade its present network infrastructure. With this scheduled expansion and modernization, the company will successfully move to the next level of business, with better network management efficiency and a broader range of new interactive broadcast applications. After the expansion, subscribers can gain access to a greater variety of content on their mobile terminals, which includes news, music and games.
"With this project we will significantly expand our presence in the SMARTS network and enter new regions on the operator’s map. The fact that SMARTS has chosen Alcatel-Lucent’s solution for its network upgrade and expansion confirms the excellent performance of our systems and the well established cooperation between our companies," Johan Vanderplaetse, President of Alcatel-Lucent in CIS, Central and Southern Europe, was quoted as saying in the report.
“It is important for SMARTS to take the lead in introducing innovative communications solutions and ensure a high-quality of services to our customers. We are looking for new technological capabilities for our network development to provide our subscribers with the same services that are available to mobile subscribers in other countries,” Andrei Girev, General Director of SMARTS, was quoted as saying in the report. “We have a long-standing relationship with Alcatel-Lucent whom we consider a reliable partner to support us in our network transformation processes.”
As part of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will offer its modern base stations sub-system (BSS) equipment, which includes the Twin TRX radio transceiver. The transceiver will increase the base station capacity to twice its original size to meet the demands of urban environments and offer greater coverage in rural environments. At the same time, it minimizes power consumption by up to 30 percent.
