AT&T has announced that its business solution division has started to sell GPS-based technology that will give government agencies the ability to track and monitor their vehicles remotely.
Known as the Mobile Fleet Management Solution, the new technology lets government officials monitor key data related to their vehicles, such as their current locations and speeds, their delivery routes and their maintenance schedules.
In addition, AT&T (

The most interesting feature of this system is that drivers can benefit from custom mapping and routing information, turn-by-turn directions and two-way communication with dispatchers, as well as safety features such as ignition locks and panic buttons.
Ultimately, the solution will enable government and commercial organizations to save fuel, improve maintenance and expand lifespan for vehicles.
The new technology is being offered in conjunction with
WebTech Wireless, a wireless technology company that will provide the wireless hardware and software to be installed into vehicles.
WebTech uses GPS technology to provide up-to-the-minute updates on vehicles' locations and to detect whether vehicles are on schedule to reach their intended destinations on time.
These features, according to AT&T, are specially tailored to the needs of government organizations including those responsible for transportation, public works, waste management, public transit and public safety.
The program provides a single-source solution, easing the purchasing, billing and budgeting processes for buyers.
"The new WebTech Wireless (
