Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile (News - Alert) USA has closed its acquisition of regional carrier SunCom Wireless.

 

The acquisition naturally enhances T-Mobile’s network coverage and inducts more than 1.1 million customers in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

 

T-Mobile and SunCom Wireless announced their merger agreement in September 2007. The deal received Federal Communications Commission approval in February 8.

 

The deal was worth $1.6 billion cash plus $800 million in assumed debt.

 

Through this acquisition, T-Mobile USA expects to significantly expand its national network to cover 259 million Americans, an increase from 244 million and it expects to realize synergies with a net present value (NPV) of approximately $1 billion through reduced roaming and operating expenses. 

 

According to some reports, T-Mobile USA is now planning to offer a new service enabling customers to phone from home via the internet. The service will run as a test in the cities of Seattle and Dallas.

 

“We look forward to offering our new customers in the Southeastern U.S. and Puerto Rico unique personal communications products and services that help customers stay connected to those who matter most,” said Robert Dotson, president and chief executive officer of T-Mobile USA, in a press release.
