WiMAX Forum to Develop Certification Laboratory in India

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The WiMAX Forum has announced new organization plans for the development of the first ever WiMAX (News - Alert) Forum Designated Certification Laboratory in India by 2008, according to a press release. The laboratory is in line with WiMAX Forum’s global initiative that focuses on creating and operating similar centers in key telecom markets.

In order to promote the activities of WiMAX in India, the WiMAX Forum India Summit was conducted earlier this week. The attendees included WiMAX Forum representatives and members, Indian government officials and Indian telecommunications companies. The participants had discussed issues that needed immediate attention in the WiMAX market in India. The discussion also included deployments, spectrum allocation, regulatory issues as well as global WiMAX initiatives. During the event, the attendees had presented their views about India's role in promoting the WiMAX ecosystem on a global level. The event also addressed the advantages of using WiMAX as the next generation standard for broadband services across India.

“India’s ecosystem is strategic to the success of WiMAX technology, and we are committed to expanding WiMAX Forum regional office initiatives to include the approval of a WiMAX Forum Certification Laboratory in India,” Ron Resnick, President and Chairman of WiMAX Forum, was quoted as saying in the report. “WiMAX is the key to addressing India’s huge market demand for broadband Internet, and preparing to meet the future needs of the country’s communication needs.”

WiMAX Forum Certified equipment offers operators the robust platform they need to launch next-generation services and applications on a broad range of devices. With the development of the Certification Laboratory in India, WiMAX equipment vendors in India will be able to expedite the certification process for the India market.

Speaking about the immediate issues that need to be resolved, Dr. Mohammad Shakouri (News - Alert), Vice-President Marketing of the WiMAX Forum, was quoted in the report saying, “A most important issue is that of allocation of spectrum in the 2.5GHz band.”

Earlier this year, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) had approved the addition of WiMAX technologies in the IMT-2000 set of standards. The milestone meant WiMAX spectrum will be more easily and readily available to operators across the world. As a result, the feasibility of establishing a cost effective wireless telecommunication infrastructure in India is also increased.

“The WiMAX Forum will continue to work with the Indian government and existing telecommunications organizations to promote and substantiate that adequate spectrum and bandwidth is allocated for WiMAX deployments while presenting no conflict with existing technologies, ” Dr. Shakouri had added.

"India is one of the fastest growing telecom markets in the world, and WiMAX technology has a major role to play in meeting the aspirations of the government and the acceleration of eCommerce to ensure the economy remains robust and sustains its current growth rate," Mr. Resnick had added.

The WiMAX Forum is also a participant in the India Telecom Conference. The WiMAX Forum members supporting the initiatives include Airspan Networks, Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert), Alvarion, Intel Corporation, Telsima and Wavesat, Inc. The WiMAX Forum member companies will also showcase their products and demonstrate live end-to-end WiMAX solutions during the Conference.
