South Korea's Billion Dollar Restoration Project Selects WiFi Service Firetide

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Firetide announced that the company will be deploying its wireless infrastructure solutions for the “4 Rivers” restoration project, which is being undertaken by the South Korean government, to preserve the environment and prevent disasters caused by flooding.

Firetide (News - Alert) Multi-Mesh Networks are providing a simple, reliable, cost-effective alternative. By simply plugging Firetide HotPort wireless mesh nodes into a power source, organizations are creating wireless mesh networks without a traditional wired Ethernet backhaul.

To support the sensor and video surveillance applications, more than 200 Firetide MIMO and non-MIMO mesh nodes along with 300 cameras from Sony, Axis Communications and Samsung will be deployed to cover this area. The four major rivers are over 240 miles in length combined. Also, free public WiFi (News - Alert) service will be provided in adjacent parks will make use of Firetide’s MIMO-based wireless access points and customer premise equipment (CPEs).

“Firetide has focused on providing a complete, high performance, multiservice wireless infrastructure to meet the rigorous demands of projects like South Korea’s ‘4 Rivers’ restoration that must support real-time video, voice and data applications,” said Bo Larsson, CEO of Firetide, in a press release. “We expect to see an increasing demand for complete wireless solutions that can reliably support converging and concurrent multiservice applications, both indoors and outdoors.”

To bring ubiquitous digital services to residents, tourists, employees and businesses of South Korean cities, Firetide has provided most of the wireless network infrastructure used in South Korea’s ‘u-City’ government-supported programs to date. Also, throughout the country, Firetide is providing its wireless technology for other non ‘u-City’ projects such as the Seoul Subway and video surveillance projects, the company has stated.

In March 2010, the company introduced outdoor wireless Ethernet bridges that redefine price-performance characteristics in the point-to-point space, thus expanding its wireless infrastructure offerings. The new Firetide Wireless Bridge 100, or “FWB-100,” will be software configurable for 2.4, 5 and 4.9 GHz and will achieve up to 35 Mbps of throughput in 1- 2 mile links. This is expected to build new market opportunities with the trademark performance.
