Taiwanese WiMAX equipment makers are reportedly anxious regarding a possible Sprint ( News - Alert) Nextel WiMAX spin-off—mainly due to the potential for WiMAX to be delayed. Changes to Sprint's $5 billion WiMAX project may have a negative effect on the worldwide telecom industry, just as Taiwanese vendors are trying to position themselves at the forefront of WiMAX ( News - Alert) innovation.
Among the possible changes brought on by Sprint’s spin-off could be that global telecom operators would be forced to switch to other 4G technologies, such as Long Term Evolution (LTV). The shift to LTV or other technologies would be bad news for Taiwan makers who have mostly bet on WiMAX products.
The worries arose after several media outlets reported that Sprint Nextel's ( News - Alert) board is considering a number of options for its WiMAX unit, including spinning off the division or trying to attract strategic investors to take over the unit.
