TCS Receives Precise Location and Canadian SMS Patents

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

E911 technology provider TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) today announced that it is the recipient U.S. Patent and Trademark Office patent number 7,091,905 titled "Improved Culled Satellite Ephemeris Information Based on Limiting A Span of An Inverted Cone for Locating Satellite In-Range Determinations," as well as the Canadian Intellectual Patent Office patent number 2,348,008 titled "Short Message Service Notification Forwarded Between Multiple Short Message Service Centers." These patents bring TCS' list to a total of 45 awarded patents and more than 120 additional patent applications pending in the United States and jurisdictions throughout the world.

The U.S. patent was awarded to the company's invention relating to a service which provides precise location services to devices on wireless networks, including Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and other wireless protocols.

Specifically, this service determines precise location for cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other mobile devices by using a reference point to select the appropriate positioning devices, which may be airborne or satellite.

The Canadian patent was awarded to the company's invention relating to a service that sends a text message to a wireless subscriber from multiple Short Message Service Centers (SMSCs). According to the company's news release, "the determination of which SMSC will send the text message to the subscriber may be fixed or dynamically determined." Similar patents have been granted to TCS in the United States, Mexico, Australia, Korea and New Zealand.

"These newest patents affirm TCS' long-term commitment to providing location and messaging solutions on a global scale that enable mobile operators to provide a better experience to their subscribers," said TCS' chairman, president and CEO Maurice B. Tosé in a statement.

TCS made news yesterday as it announced it was chosen by U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific to provide a satellite-based, encrypted emergency communications network for back-up communications. Under the new contract, TCS will install infrastructure, provision on-demand satellite services and stand up a SwiftLink 2310 remote network node. The TCS SwiftLink product suite is comprised of commercial modules and components used for strategic response situations.
