Wi-Fi Hits the Beach Club: Report

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Wi-Fi zones are spreading not only on college campuses and coffeehouses; they are also starting to infiltrate places considered respites from the rigors of everyday life—such as the beach house.

According to a report on Sun-Sentinel.Com, Florida’s adult communities from Boca Raton to Wellington are contemplating equipping the clubhouses with Wi-Fi, as requests from residents pour in for broadband access.

For instance, neighbors of Stuart Silverman, president of the computer club in the Valencia Lakes community in South Florida, asked if they could install temporary Wi-Fi to accommodate their grown kids who were visiting and wished to work on their laptops.

Silverman responded, "The clubhouse has Wi-Fi.”

According to the report, Wi-Fi has been installed in at least four clubhouses, thanks to former cable TV company Adelphia, which installed the modems and routers for free in 2004 in order to introduce broadband through computer clubs.

Since Valencia Lakes, Valencia Falls, Coral Lakes and Ponte Vecchio are quite close to each other and had computer clubs, Martin McClancy, the former Adelphia employee in charge of the project, picked them for WiFi installation.

"By having WiFi (News - Alert) in the clubhouse, we can connect a laptop to a projector and use our screen to demonstrate how to surf the Internet, how to e-mail," Stuart said. "Before, we had to take 100 feet of telephone cable connected from a phone in the office and tape it to the floor, so people didn't trip over it."

In Coral Lakes, community president Murray Goldstein was quoted as saying Wi-Fi was installed in stages to ensure that they work properly. The process started with the multipurpose room and spread through the expansive clubhouse. Even the pool gazebo has Wi-Fi access.
.
According to the report, some residents in the communities have questioned the need for such extensive Wi-Fi access, particularly when many have computers in their homes. Stuart responded by stating that some residents don’t have high-speed Internet access in their homes or experience poor connections or other computer problems.
